What Happened in February?

Oh hey, it’s me! (from Skyline Chili Olentangy on Insta)

Hello everyone! I hope February has been good for everyone! Mine has had its ups and downs, but it’s still been one to remember. It’s a Leap Year, which means lots of people are turning one this year (even though they’ve been alive for four years!). I don’t know anyone who has a Leap Year birthday, but the idea of technically only having a birthday every four years is strange…but interesting.

Anyways, not a whole lot happened this month. I blame the fact that I didn’t take notes on the month like I usually do, and it’s a shorter month at that. That all being said, I did do some memorable things…let’s dive into it!

Visiting the In-Laws

10/10 pic from Matt’s aunt’s house. We celebrated our four years together this month, but I didn’t write about it cause y’all know I love this man, I don’t gotta tell you again!

At the beginning of the month, Matt and I went to Youngstown to visit his grandparents and a few of his aunts and uncles. I officially met some of his family that I only knew from our wedding, which was nice! It was particularly nice to visit his grandparent’s new house. Matt’s uncle built the house for them to be able to get around their living space better, and I gotta tell you guys…it’s the perfect little house for his lovely grandparents.

It’s always tense when I go into more rural places, with or without Matt, because unfortunately some people are still a little racist. Usually I’m able to ignore it, but I couldn’t help but notice the stares this time around. I have a feeling it was because I was with Matt and his entirely White family, and even then, his own family members would look at him and I a little too hard.

Like I said, I usually don’t care, but when it’s my own in-laws, it gets a little awkward.

Besides that obvious bump in the road, the trip itself was very pleasant! Grandma and Grandpa Golubich have always loved having me around, and I always love being around them. They accept Matt and I, and that’s what matters most to us. I’m sure everyone could see how happy Matt was when the two of us were in group settings. At the end of the day, what more could you want than for your own son/grandson/family member to be happy with their spouse?

You Know I Gotta Talk About My Blue Boy

I saw Sonic the Hedgehog twice this month, I’m not even going to pretend I didn’t. I enjoyed it both times I went, and if you want to read my little review about it, go ahead and read here!

After having time to think about the movie and after hearing how my friends and family liked it, I’ve only solidified my love for it. It really was a near-perfect take on a classic video game icon. There were scenes and jokes for all ages, there was action, good pacing, the list goes on. If you want to hear one more opinion before you go to the movies, I’d be honored if you chose my review!

Co-DM and Dice Roller Extraordinaire

Matt’s friends have started two Dungeons and Dragons campaigns this month, which is very exciting because I love watching them get into character and enter into an imaginary world together. They wanted me to be involved, but I honestly have a hard time playing because there are A LOT of rules that I fail to follow 100%. That, plus the building of a character is a process that takes me longer than most as well…I want them to be perfect, but I can never commit to the act long enough to actually have fun.

Matt’s friend Brian, the Dungeon Master, suggested I roll for him to spice things up a bit, since the group kind of knows how Brian’s dice rolls go (it’s a thing, apparently). The first time we all played together and I got to roll to basically almost kill everyone, I knew Brian had accidentally created my favorite role in DnD: Dice Roller.

It’s fun to not only learn from Brian how to properly guide multiple players through a story, it’s also fun to completely destroy people with my juicy dice rolls. Seeing both the groups react to my accidental luck with rolling D20s really gives me a sense of accomplishment. I’m not being left out just because I don’t want to stress about making a character and knowing all the rules, and I think it’s super cool that Matt’s friends all enjoy having me around.

Music Obsessions

This month, Allie X’s new album “Cape God” came out. It’s been getting not so great reviews, but I honestly enjoyed it a lot! I included her song “Susie Save Your Love” featuring Mitski (whom I’ve heard of but after hearing their voice, I know I’ll have to dive deep into their work) on the playlist this month!

I also included a cover of “Unchained Melody” by Crywolf and Roniit. Just like Crywolf’s other stuff, it’s hauntingly beautiful and gives me chills every time I listen to it. Roniit’s voice is a welcome addition to the cover, and I think without her it would be missing something.

“Rodeo” by Lil Nas X got a makeover, featuring the legendary Nas in this remix. The music video is amazing, and fits my futuristic vampire aesthetic very well. I’d check it out if you want to see a well-done music video!

I included some new-to-me stuff, a Lofi remix of “Green Hill Zone” by Lofi Waifu (because Sonic), and some old goodies I’ve been really into lately. Some are love songs, some are just good jams. Check out the February playlist here!

Life at Skyline

https://cincyshirts.com/blogs/news/national-chili-day-is-a-little-different-in-cincinnati

The end of slow season at work is upon us, FINALLY. As a career server, work has been pretty bleak lately. It’s post-holidays and pre-tax refund season, so no one tips nearly as well as they should! That being said, I have my regulars to thank for keeping food on the table at home.

Behind the scenes, work has been busy. We’re planning for the Busy Season, which includes Spring (people like eating out more when it is nice outside, it’s a real thing!). National Chili Day as well as Free Coney Day are two of the busiest days of the year for Skyline, and we are shaping up to be more prepared than ever for this week (!!!) and next month’s crazy sales days.

This particular Busy Season, I’ve got many projects to finish before FCD. Now more than ever, I’m feeling the stress of an Administrative Assistant! It’s very, very fulfilling to come to work everyday and get one more thing done towards making life easier for everyone at work. Whether it’s helping make the schedule for high traffic days, creating new ways to train our newbies to be more prepared, or just printing out extra coloring sheets for kids that come in, it really is nice to see how my hard work makes it easy for my coworkers to do their jobs every day.

For Black History Month, we ran a nice little weekly celebration for the African American employees (Aka, me and three other people) on our Instagram. We also did a whole series leading up to Valentine’s Day, and we plan on doing lots of stuff as NCD and FCD approach, so not to promote my job or anything…but if you live around our Skyline, or if you just like looking at delicious food and friendly faces, feel free to follow our Instagram to see our cute posts and stories…we’ve got a lot planned!

Well, that’s it for this month. I’m hoping my next obsession (Animal Crossing New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch coming out on March 20th, of course) will not prevent me from writing posts next month! March should be a good month in general because I’ll have even more to do at work (yay keeping busy!), Matt’s birthday is later in the month (yay for 26!), and we’re going to start dipping our toes into more sunshine and warmer weather (although it hasn’t been that cold this winter, I’m just thankful for longer days!).

Thanks for reading, as always! Follow me on Twitter so that you can get blog updates as well as Goofy Mary Shenanigans all day, every day. I’ll see y’all next week!
