How to Make Dirt Pudding
Hello everyone! With Thanksgiving this week, I thought I’d share another recipe I know: Dirt Pudding! My Aunt Linda used to make it every year and I’m pretty sure I ate it all before anyone could get to it. It’s my favorite dessert, hands down.
I learned the recipe from her when I got older, and after making it over and over, I kind of know it by heart. So, let’s get into it!
You’ll need:
- 2 Cool Whips (or one of the 16 oz containers. Use Vegan if you’re going dairy free! I usually use Truwhip)
- 2 Vanilla Instant Jello Pudding Boxes (or one big one. Look for vegan instant pudding for a plant-based dessert!)
- 3 cups of milk (or lactose free milk, or any other sort of dairy free alternative)
- 8 oz of cream cheese (softened, use plant based cream cheese if dairy free!)
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- 1 package of Oreos (I got the double stuffed family pack, but normal Oreos are perfectly fine too!)
To begin, you’ll need to thaw out the Cool Whip and soften the cream cheese. You can work with halfway thawed Cool Whip, but you can’t work with cold cream cheese.
While you’re waiting on everything to come to room temperature, go ahead and break up those Oreos. Most people like to run them through a food processor, some people like to throw them in a Ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin. I like to toss them into a Ziplock and throw the bag around the house until the Oreos are crumbly. I like to have the Oreos a little thick instead of the powdery texture most recipes call for. It’s a texture thing for me! Use your best judgement when it comes to how big or small your Oreo pieces are.
Combine the Cool Whip, cream cheese, pudding mixes, and milk until smooth. You can do this with a whisk, but it’s much easier to do with a handheld mixer. My tip is to whip the cream cheese first! I always forget to, and then I get cream cheese chunks all up in my mix. Don’t be like me!
Once you whip up the mix, slowly whip in the powdered sugar. You want that mix to be creamy!
Grab a 9x13 pan and make sure it’s clean. Then, spread out a healthy amount of Oreo crumbles onto the bottom of the pan. Dump out about half of the pudding mixture into the pan, spread, and cover that pudding with more Oreos. Alternate until you’re all out of pudding, then use the last of your Oreos to spread on top.
Once that’s done, you’re done! Throw that pan in the fridge for at least an hour to let everything set, and you’re good to go!
Easy delicious desserts are my favorite, and Dirt Pudding will always have a special place in my heart. It reminds me of when I was a kid at Thanksgiving. Hopefully this dessert can become a staple on your dessert table this holiday season!
To make it dairy free is pretty simple as well. Just use dairy free alternatives and prepare as normal. Making it Vegan is pretty easy as well, so long as you can find plant-based pudding mix and Cool Whip. I make Vegan Dirt Pudding now whenever I make it for my family!
