5 Things to Occupy Your Snow Day

Hello everyone! Today in my city, there’s a Level 2 snow emergency. All my plans got canceled in exchange for staying in! That means it’s a snow day in the Golubich house! I haven’t had a true snow day in a long time, but I remember loving them when I was a little kid. Being able to “skip school” because of the weather was always a little treat. There are some things that I remember doing during my snow days that I still do when I’m snowed in to this day!

Hot Chocolate, of course

I love hot chocolate. It’s one of life’s simple pleasures. Whether you make it instant or make it from scratch, hot chocolate is divine. Hershey’s has my favorite hot chocolate recipe that I followed and made during my teen years, and I still go to it when I’m craving that from scratch taste. Of course, this isn’t an ad for Hershey’s, it’s just truly the only from scratch recipe I go to and trust!

If you’ve never made hot chocolate from scratch, it’s pretty easy. I’ll link the recipe here so that you can give it a go! I suggest putting lots of mini marshmallows in your cup before pouring in the hot chocolate…trust me, it creates a whole new creamy experience.

Enjoy that homemade hot chocolate by the window as you watch the snow fall, or maybe curl up with a nice book and sip!

Movie Marathon

When I was a little little kid, my sister and I would watch the same movies on repeat. Nowadays, I go back to those movies when I’m feeling nostalgic. Disney movies were totally on the rotation, as well as “Spice World” (aka the Spice Girls movie) and the Brandy “Cinderella” (which is technically a Disney movie, since it’s on Disney+).

Snow days are the best time to have a movie marathon. If you have a roommate (significant other or otherwise), it’s always a treat to introduce them to movies you used to watch as a kid. On our honeymoon, Matt and I watched “the Aristocats” and he enjoyed it! When I showed him the Brandy “Cinderella”, on the other hand, he pointed out various things that got on my nerves (“Why is her mouth always open?” Maybe because she’s singing, I don’t know!!). Either way, I always love introducing people to things I love, and what perfect time to watch a bunch of movies than a snow day?

It’s Time for Hobbies!

I’m always talking about hobbies. Finding new ones, appreciating the ones you already have…hobbies are a big deal to me. They keep my mind occupied and honestly, it’s fun to dive deep into them. If you have a hobby you’ve been putting off in your daily life, maybe a snow day is the perfect reason to get back into it!

If you’ve got video games, go play ’em. If you’ve got books unread, go read ’em. If you have art stuff laying around that you haven’t touched in a while, go pick ’em back up! If you can’t leave the house, hobbies are a great way to stay sane.

Be Productive

I am the Queen of Unproductivity. I hate doing things that need to be done. Some call it laziness, I call it procrastination! Unfortunately, life also gets in the way of being productive around the house. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry need to be done. Luckily, during a snow day, there’s not really an excuse to not do things around the house! Chores need to be done eventually. Might as well do them when you can’t leave the house.

Matt and I are trying to get all the laundry done today as I type this. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll all get done by the time it’s time for bed, but if we can put a dent in it, that will make us both happy. If you’ve been putting off chores for whatever reason, today might be the day to get them done! Or at least started!

Go Play Outside

Going to play in the snow is a universal experience. I don’t care if your nine or ninety nine, playing in the snow is just so much fun. I like to have little snowball fights with people, make snow angels, or make the classic snowman. I’ve seen families making igloos in their front yards, or making a whole snow family! Snow forts are also very impressive for an intense snow fighting experience.

If you haven’t played out in the snow for a while, maybe go outside and make a little snowman. Do you live with people? If they’re interested, maybe you all can make the snow day fun by playing together! It sounds trivial and childlike, but playing in the snow is too much fun to not put on this snow day list. Trust me, watching 30-somethings play in the snow is so great, and being one of those adults playing out there is even better!

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope that wherever you are, you’re staying warm and healthy. If you’ve got a snow emergency, don’t go outside unless you have to! Tomorrow, I’m going to have to go to work and I’m dreading venturing out into the winter wonderland that is Columbus right now. I think that today, I’m going to make some hot chocolate, play some of the Sims 4, and hang out on the couch with my husband and the cats.

In the meantime, y’all should follow me on Twitter for future blog updates as well as daily Maryisims! I’ve been tweeting about my pregnancy a lot now that I’ve announced it, so it’s also a good way to keep up with that. Feel free to tip on ko-fi as well if you liked what I wrote today, and want to support future self-publishing!

I’ll see you here next week with another post!
